Jane Boyd is excited to bring you a new fall line up! Starting September 2, children in the community will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities at the community center. Some are new, others are tried and true. All exciting! Below is a brief description of the clubs and programming available this fall.

Read, Write, Ready!
This is a program for students in 5th-8th grade. Directed by the members of Mt. Zion church, this tutoring program aims to increase both computer and reading literacy through tutoring, activities, and field trips.

“Green Kids”
This Earth-friendly club is a homegrown effort to raise awareness of the importance of “being green”. Children will participate in a variety of activities including gardening, neighborhood cleanup, recycling, field trips, meeting eco-friendly community leaders and more. It is our goal that the children in our community will gain a better understanding of our earth and the importance of protecting it’s delicate balance.

Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts
Jane Boyd has teamed up once again with the boy and girl scouts in the community to bring their activities to Jane Boyd. Both scouts will meet once a week at the community center.

East Side Arts Academy
We are excited for our new partnership with the Cedar Rapids East Side Arts Academy. Eastside Arts Academy provides youth with multiple opportunities to explore and excel in performing, visual and creative arts. EAA celebrates the rich diversity in our community, ensures quality instruction to all students and promotes artistic excellence in a safe, supportive and creative environment. They provide students with excellent leadership and instruction in all areas of the arts. Currently, Eastside Arts Academy has over 30 staff members who specialize in art, drama, creative writing, dance and music instruction. Programming with Jane Boyd will run October-December. Children will have to opportunity to participate in a variety of arts including a mural painting class and a junk rhythm class.

Lego League
Jane is excited to participate again in this year’s “Lego League”. This program introduces children to the fun and experience of solving real-world problems by applying math, science, and technology. Lego League is brought to you by the partnership between Lego and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Technology) Children will build robots using legos to solve the challenge presented to them. This year’s theme is “Climate Connections- Building a Global Game Plan”. This program is for 5th and 6th graders and requires a large time commitment. There are still 3 spots open on the team. You don’t have to know anything about robots or legos to join if your child desires to learn and enjoys working in a team environment then sign them up!

Partnership with Jenny Cline Center for dance (see below)

A new dance program is coming in September to the Jane Boyd Community House, and its instructor promises high quality instruction in an inclusive environment. The Jenny Cline Center for Dance will offer instruction in tap, jazz, ballet, and modern technique for students ranging from pre-school through adult. There will be an open house at Jane Boyd, a nonprofit devoted to educational programs for youth and families, on August 28 from 5-8 p.m.

“I’m excited to be offering a new program at Jane Boyd that I know will be appealing to students and their families,” Cline said. “I’m committed to teaching the fundamentals of technique so that students can constantly progress as dancers. I have a conservative approach to costuming and music, and I have a passionate belief in the potential of all students. We’re serious about building better dancers while building a better community.”

Cline, who was trained at the prestigious Center for Performing Arts in the Greater St. Louis area and at the University of Iowa, was the lead instructor for the Cedar Rapids Recreation Department for six years. During that time, she built a program that welcomed a wide array of students, including those not easily served by other dance programs.

“I’ve enjoyed a really diverse group of students over the years from all kinds of backgrounds,” Cline said. “I’ve taught students who were just learning English, I’ve taught students with learning disabilities, and I’ve had a wonderful experience with a hearing-impaired student. Dance is something everyone can take part in and find success.”

That commitment to inclusive instruction buoyed by high expectations will continue to be a hallmark of Cline’s approach as she launches the new program at Jane Boyd. Her efforts dovetail with Jane Boyd’s new Achievement Academy.

“The Jenny Cline Center for Dance is a perfect example of what we hope to accomplish with our Achievement Academy,” said Karl Cassell, Jane Boyd’s executive director. “We believe that access and inclusion in activities for our youth in the Achievement Academy is what Jane Boyd is responsible and becoming equipped for.”

Though the 2006 renovation of the Jane Boyd Community House included the creation of a dance room, a suitable floor was not installed at that time. Cline and Cassell worked together to raise funds for the purchase and installation of a high quality floor. Private funds were combined with a grant from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, allowing a sprung floor to be installed in July.

“This is certainly one of the nicest dance floors in the area,” Cline said, “and it’s designed to minimize the risk of injury, which is a key concern when you’re working with dancers of any age.”

According to Cline, one of the advantages of a nonprofit dance program is the ability to keep costs down for participants.
“Our cost per class is one of the lowest in the community and we’re committed to keeping other costs low, as well,” Cline said. “Our costumes will reasonably priced, there will be no recital participation fee, and we won’t charge families high prices to attend their student’s performances.”

Registration for the program is underway at the Jane Boyd Community House at 943 14th Ave. S.E. or by phone at 366-0431. Additional information is available by contacting Cline at 365-0792 or via email at JennyClineDance@msn.com.
